About Guyana Live

Live weather, wind, rain and river conditions for all 10 regions of Guyana on one 3D map, in plain language. Free, and built to be light on mobile data.

Prototype Guyana Live is an independent community prototype, built in spare time to see what a free, live, Guyana-wide conditions map could look like. It is not affiliated with any government agency.

This is not an official warning service

Everything here is an estimate from computer models. For official forecasts, warnings and tide times, always check the Hydrometeorological Service and the Civil Defence Commission.

How the flood watch works

Reading the 3D map

  • Height of each region = the forecast rain at its reference town (e.g. Georgetown for Region 4, Lethem for Region 9) for the hour on the time slider. Flat = dry. Heights are exaggerated on purpose (like a bar chart standing on the map) so they show at country scale.
  • Colour = the flood-watch estimate (calm, watch, high) for the next 24 hours.
  • Wind streams and the rain field come from a coarser forecast grid (~110 km between points), blended smoothly. They show the big picture, not your street.
  • Press Ctrl K (or the search bar) to jump to any region, town, place or river.

Data sources

  • Weather & rain — Open-Meteo.com forecast API, CC BY 4.0. Computer-model estimates, not station readings (the "Measured now" card shows real readings where we have them). Checked at 25 points across the regions.
  • Wind streams & rain field — Open-Meteo.com forecast API (CC BY 4.0), 48 grid points 1° apart, hourly for the next 24 hours, refreshed every hour.
  • River flow — Open-Meteo Flood API (CC BY 4.0), based on the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Modeled on a ~5 km grid, not gauge readings.
  • Region boundaries — geoBoundaries (GUY ADM1), from © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0. Simplified for this site.
  • Base map — OpenFreeMap, © OpenMapTiles, data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • Terrain shading (large screens) — Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data, by Mapzen, from SRTM, GMTED, ETOPO1 and others.
  • Satellite imagery — EOxCloudless 2025 by EOX IT Services GmbH (contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 2025), CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. A cloud-free mosaic of 2025 photos: it shows what places look like, not today's conditions.
  • Globe — NASA Blue Marble (shaded relief + ocean depth) via NASA GIBS, with clouds from NASA Visible Earth's Blue Marble cloud composite (public domain): real satellite observations, but typical clouds, not today's.
  • Live clouds (optional) — NASA GIBS, GOES-East ABI GeoColor (NOAA). Today's real satellite picture, updated every 10 minutes, about an hour behind real time.
  • Airport weather reports (measured) — aviationweather.gov (NOAA / US National Weather Service, public domain): the official METAR reports from Timehri (Cheddi Jagan, every hour), Lethem and Mabaruma (only some hours). Real instruments at one spot each, refreshed every 10 minutes.
  • Lightning (measured) — the Geostationary Lightning Mapper on NOAA's GOES-East satellite (public domain), 2 km grid, read through Unidata's THREDDS server (NSF Unidata). The last 15 minutes, refreshed every 5. It can miss weak flashes or place one a few km off.
  • Satellite rain (optional, measured) — NASA GPM IMERG Early rain rate via NASA GIBS (free, no restrictions): every 30 minutes, ~10 km pixels, about 4–6 hours behind.
  • Place photos — Wikimedia Commons, by many photographers under CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0 and public-domain licences. Each photo shows its photographer, licence and a link to the original. Resized for phones.
  • Landscapes — high-resolution photographs from Wikimedia Commons (CC BY, CC BY-SA, public domain), credited on every photo and in the section's credits. Fonts: League Gothic and Newsreader (SIL OFL).
  • Rain on screen — appears only where the weather model says it is raining now, slanted by the modelled wind.
  • Software — MapLibre GL JS (BSD-3), Geist and Geist Mono fonts (SIL OFL).

Data health

Every source is checked before anything reaches this page: values impossible for Guyana, missing pieces or out-of-date times are rejected, and the last good copy stays up, with its age shown, until a good update arrives. The data is also refreshed around the clock, even when nobody is looking.

Privacy notice

Last updated 27 October 2026

In short: Guyana Live doesn't ask who you are. There are no accounts, no ads, no cookies set by this site and no tracking. The only thing we keep on our side is an anonymous address for alert notifications, and only if you turn alerts on.

If you use “Find my region”

Your phone asks you first. The position is used only on your phone, to work out which region you're in and put a dot on the map. It is never sent to us or anyone else, and it isn't saved.

If you use “Listen”

The summary is read out by your phone's own voice. On most phones this happens on the device; some browsers may use their maker's online voice service (Google, Apple, Microsoft), as with any read-aloud feature. We send nothing.

If you turn on flood-watch alerts

  • What we keep: the notification address your browser gives us (a long random web link from Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft, plus the keys needed to encrypt messages to it), the regions you chose, and when you turned alerts on. It doesn't include your name, phone number, email, contacts or location.
  • Why: only to send you a notification when the flood watch for one of your regions goes up or eases. Nothing else, and we never sell or share it.
  • Where: Cloudflare's servers (our hosting company), which may be outside Guyana. The address is stored under a scrambled ID, and alert messages are encrypted so only your browser can read them.
  • How long: until you press Turn off alerts (it's deleted straight away), or until your browser stops accepting our messages, for example after you block notifications or clear this site's data. We then delete it automatically the next time we try to send.

On your own device

  • Your settings (map layers, 3D on or off, whether you've seen the intro, your alert regions) are saved in your browser so the site remembers them. They never leave your device. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.
  • A copy of the site and the latest data is kept so it still opens with no signal. It's the same public data everyone sees.

Services that see your visit

Like any website, the servers that deliver it see your internet (IP) address and browser type in order to send the page. They are: Cloudflare (hosting, security), and for the map pictures OpenFreeMap, EOX, NASA and Amazon Web Services (terrain tiles). Weather, river, airport and lightning data are fetched by our own server, so those sources never see you. We don't run advertising or social-media trackers.

Your choices and rights

You can use everything without turning on alerts. Because we don't know who you are, there is nothing else to look up, correct or delete. Turning alerts off removes all we hold for your device. Questions or requests under Guyana's data protection law: contact NexSite GY. If this notice changes, the date above changes with it.
